The short film El Aguacate attachs on something that’s unspoken and unconsidered. There’s a question that may form early on which continues to draw the viewers in to learn more. It may be pushed back in their mind until it arises in a way that changes everything.
Darwin Serink has a point to make about the harsh realities of our current sociopolitical way which can impact ordinary lives. By establishing an easy rhythm that draws the audience in, El Aguacate is able to deliver its central message, which is best left unspoiled.
The film which has a rough 10 minute showing, is a very sweet, observed romance between two Spanish speaking senior citizen characters living in America and working for a custodial services company. Raul (Toneey Acevedo) cleans the same office every Saturday with Rosa (Tina D’Marco). Although he is advanced in age, he has a schoolboy crush on Tina but hasn’t been able to build the courage to ask her out. The closest thing to romantic affection he can manage everytime he sees Rosa is to share an avocado. Not just any avocado which can be brought at a shop but from the tree which is housed in Tony’s back garden. The story picks up just as Raul finally decides that, next time he and Rosa are together, he’s going to take the risk of inviting her on a date.
As disheartening as it is, the film is bound to make you think about why things are the way they are. As it approach the feels, it doesn’t always make one feel good. This little film really touches on the loveliness of humanity.
