United States when his father started working for the University of South Carolina. Troup started bowling at the age of 7 and was able to choose his nickname at 11 after he was a part of The Guppies which was the South Carolina team of youth bowlers, which played as captain. Troup later told me, “We won a state title and we set a state record for juniors back then and it just stuck. I don’t know why. I just started telling everybody to start calling me Guppy.” The year 1973 was when Troup became a professional and was a part of the PBA Tour for the 1976 season. After his first two seasons on the tour Troup was unsuccessful, and was not able to get financial support from a sponsor and was forced to draw on personal savings to compete in 1978. It was his first season on tour and he also won his first PBA event that year which was held in Battle Creek, Michigan. The win at the Kessler Open awarded Troup an award of $8,000 as the first prize which doubled his earnings for the season up to that point.

Troup has earned a reputation for his flashy clothes when bowling. The Pittsburgh Press’ Bob Kravitz declared him to be”the PBA Tour’s “gaudiest dresser”. Troup said about his dress style it was “People tuned in to see what kind of pants I’d be wearing. They didn’t care how I bowled.” Troup has complemented his outfit with accessories , including the gold of his jewellery as well as sunglasses. The other items he’s included fish-themed designs on them, such as shoes, pants and even earrings. Troup also has an erupting strike, an upward hip motion that has been dubbed”the “Gup Thrust.” In 1988 the journalist Frank Deford called Troup “about the only pro bowler these days with a flamboyant public persona.”

In the year 1983 Troup won at the February Quaker State Open in Grand Prairie, Texas, the sixth PBA Tour tournament he had been a winner of in his career. Then, he entered a slump period of not being able to qualify for a live final for over one year. The streak ended during the 1984 US Open. Troup defeated his three competitors in the finals of the stepladder in order to make it to the championship game in the final against Mark Roth, but lost by seven pins since the American was unable to get the tenth frame strike that could have won him the title. Troup did earn $25,000 for finishing second. In 1984 Troup played in a 4-tournament period that included three telecast finals, and a win at Columbus, Ohio. Troup again made more than $80,000 in the course. His eight PBA Tour victory came in 1985 at the Austin Open. In 1990, he’d cut back his playing schedule due to the birth of his child. Troup began playing on in the PBA Senior Tour in 2000 and was named as the circuit’s Rookie of Year. Troup is semi-retired in 2014 and is employed at a school , when he is not competing on the PBA Senior Tour. In in 2008 Troup won 41 times in PBA Regional Tour tournaments, as well as eight wins on the national tour. Additionally, he placed in the runner-up position twice in national tournaments and also had 12 top five outcomes.
