As fans know, The Weeknd did not even get a single nomination at the Grammy Awards this year in spite of the fact that ‘Blinding Lights’ is one of the biggest hits of his career as well as of the industry in general! With that being said, it turns out that the star is not happy about the snub and is, in fact, so mad that the three Grammys he already has ‘mean nothing’ to him anymore as a result.
During a new interview for Billboard, The Weeknd opened up about the snub, admitting that ‘Look, I personally don’t care anymore. I have three Grammys, which mean nothing to me now, obviously. It’s not like, ‘Oh, I want the Grammy!’ It’s just that this happened, and I’m down to get in front of the fire, as long as it never happens again. I suck at giving speeches anyways. Forget awards shows.’
He went on to admit that not receiving any nominations at the acclaimed award show really feels like ‘an attack.’
‘I use a sucker punch as an analogy, because it just kind of hit me out of nowhere. I definitely felt … things. I do not know if it was sadness or anger. I think it was just confusion. Just wanted answers. Like, ‘What happened?’ We did everything right, I think. I am not a cocky person. I am not arrogant. People told me that I was going to get nominated. The world told me, like, ‘This is it; this is your year.’ We were all really confused.’
The singer also told Billboard that he’s even gotten messages about this from people he hadn’t spoken to in a long time, many of them in the music industry as well.
None of them understood what happened and why he was snubbed so they reached out, confused and shocked.
As for one of the theories, that the Grammys are racist, The Weeknd definitely did not reject that possibility, pointing out that in its 61 year history, only 10 black artists have won ‘album of the year.’
