Supermarket giant Woolworths is using one of its Christmas cakes to help give back to the community this festive season.
Meet Wally the Wombat: A delicious chocolate sponge roll, with creamy chocolate filling and coated in buttercream, finished off with a super cute wombat face complete with Santa hat.
But the delectable marsupial provides more than just a sweet festive treat. For every Wally sold, Woolworths will donate $1 to WIRES wildlife rescue charity.
The cake serves 10 and retails for $25.
The wombat-shaped cake was designed by a family-owned baker in Sydney that was established in 2016 called Buonissimo.
Woolworths Food Company managing director Guy Brent said: “Australian wildlife have had a rough few years between drought, bushfires, record rains and floods, and as Today’s Fresh Food People, we’re determined to help all Australians, even the furry ones.
“Our work and support for WIRES in their efforts to rescue, rehabilitate, and release vulnerable and endangered native animals is one of the many ways we’re working to foster positive change in our local communities.
“Wally the Wombat will not only help our customers have fun while entertaining this season but support WIRES to nurture our native animals back to the wild.”
The wildlife charity said it was over the moon at the support.
“The Woolworths and WIRES Food For Wildlife program has provided carers across Australia with extensive support to take care of injured or orphaned wildlife and return them to the wild,” WIRES CEO Leanne Taylor said.
“We are extremely grateful to Woolworths for their support and we are thrilled with the launch of Wally the Wombat in stores to help our animals in care get back into the wild in time for Christmas.”
Social media users immediately fell in love with the cake.
“I feel bad eating one,” a social media user wrote online about Wally the Wombat.
Another said: “OMG he’s like our version of Colin the Caterpillar,” referring to a famed UK cake sold at Marks & Spencer.
One simply said: “I want one.”
